Syllabus

Intro To Web Design
2013-2014
3rd Period Semester 1/2
Ben Kaye-Skinner

Purpose of the class
The class will provide students with the foundations of creating valid, structured, and visually appealing webpages and websites. Students will learn the HTML and CSS coding languages and how to apply those languages with coding practices to create their files.

Grading
Students will have varying assignments, including projects, quizzes and tests. All projects will be completed on the student laptops and will be handed in electronically. All quizzes and tests will be written.

Small projects and quizzes will count for 20% of the student grade. These include chapter summaries and are completed by most students during class time.

Unit tests and projects will count for 60% of the student’s grade. These are summative assignments and will show a student’s knowledge and application of a broad range of topics.

The Final Project will count for 20% of the student’s grade. The final project will be discussed at the beginning of the semester and can be worked on throughout.

Computer and internet use
As a class about the internet, laptops will be used daily. Students will abide by school policies regarding laptops. Also, due to the nature of the course, students will be uploading files to the internet that can be accessed by anyone. The domain used for this is owned by Mr. Kaye-Skinner, not the school, so all files uploaded are legally his. Any file uploads that would violate state or federal laws will be reported immediately.

The class will use three programs: Filezilla, Komodo Edit and GIMP. Each of these programs is free and students are encouraged to use them at home. Filezilla requires an internet connection to use.

Food and drink
Because of the nature of electronics (they don’t like to get wet), food and drink will not be allowed in class.
